If you read my Building 101 – The Design Studio post, you’re familiar with what goes on at the design studio and the important things we considered during this phase of our new home build.
I went into my design meetings with a clear vision, a broad understanding of what my options were and most importantly, what my overall budget was for upgrades. Having an organized budget tool to manage the wide range of selections that are involved in the design process was critical. I can’t emphasize how beneficial it was to have a spreadsheet of every upgrade I considered. Marble! Everyone loves the look of marble and when we built our townhome I insisted that I have marble everywhere. I remember talking to my mom one night about my plans to deck our house out in marble. To say that flooring was the hardest decision that went into our build would be an understatement. Narrowing down a style we liked and then finding an option that fit into our budget was both stressful and frustrating.
If you’re doing a fully custom home, this may be a little easier because you will not be limited to the builder options.
